Multi-Cultural Families Explore STEM Education

During October 2013, I conducted a series of STEM Family Science Night workshops for Collier County School District. STEM Family Science Nights by Dr. Diana Wehrell-GrabowskiFamilies were introduced to STEM practices and content during two-hour hands-on STEM workshops. Over 30 families attended each of the three sessions. The majority of the participants were Hispanic, and many of the adults did not speak English fluently or at all.  Translators were available throughout the sessions, and parents received a manual with the STEM explorations in their native language. The parents and children conducted a wide-array of  hands-on-minds-on STEM explorations throughout the two hour sessions to explore numerous STEM concepts including: engineering design process, nature of matter, force, motion, and energy concepts.
