Just about every week I am getting inquiries to conduct STEM teacher training workshops and interactive STEM keynotes for the early childhood teaching audience. I’m elated that throughout our nation and world educational leaders and teachers have realized the importance of incorporating STEM practices and content into the early childhood classroom. Many early childhood teachers are already implementing STEM explorations within their classrooms, and do not even realize it. From block-building to designing ramps, and exploring STEM careers, STEM content is present in many early childhood classrooms. Within the past several years there have been numerous STEM-related books published geared for the early childhood level. Below is a list of some of my favorite STEM references for early childhood educators and parents of young children. The following books are well written, have great ideas, and illustrations. I highly recommend that individuals schools, districts, and parents consider purchasing a copy of each of the following. We celebrate the Week of the Young Child during April 12th-18th, 2015. This is the perfect opportunity for early childhood teachers, parents, librarians etc. to look at how they can incorporate science, technology, and math (STEM) into early childhood classroom experiences this week. Young children are naturally curious about the natural and physical world around them. STEM investigations provide opportunities for young children to observe, compare, contrast, build, be creative, develop critical thinking skills, communicate and collaborate with their peers. The following photos are from STEM lessons I have conducted in early childhood classrooms, as well as photos taken during STEM teacher training workshops for early childhood educators. Suggested early childhood STEM explorations include: block building, building 3-d structures with readily available materials, building boats, designing and building ramps to explore force, motion, and energy concepts, exploring patterns and shapes in nature and in man-made objects, incorporating age-appropriate technology in the early childhood classroom such as rulers, pan balances, magnifying lenses, simple microscopes, digital microscopes, Nabi Junior, levels, and more. I have found that early childhood teachers are really excited about incorporating STEM explorations into their classrooms on a daily basis.
