Teachers Introduced to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

Spent two days in East Saint Louis introducing K-12 teachers to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The Next Generation Science Standards is a major change in the way science is taught and learned. It will require a paradigm shift in both teachers and students, and I imagine many years of quality long-term, cohesive professional staff development before our nation see the positive impacts the six conceptual shifts of NGSS vs. how science has been taught. Two days is a drop in the bucket for an introduction to the NGSS, but at least it’s a start. A major change in the NGSS is that science and engineering practices are integrated in K-12 science education. Many teachers have not had experience with the engineering design process which is the foundation of STEM education practices. With a two day introductory session to the NGSS my focus is in introducing teachers to the seven conceptual shifts that science educators and stake holders need to make to effectively use the NGSS. Reviewing the basics of the three dimensions of the NGSS (Science and Engineering Practices, Cross Cutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas). Throughout the training teachers are introduced to inquiry-based lessons that incorporate all three dimensions of the NGSS. I place a great deal of emphasis on providing opportunities for teachers to get a clearer understanding of the engineering design process since I have observed this is a professional staff development topic that has been lacking. I enjoyed working with the K-12 ¬†teachers, we all know teachers have a great deal on their plate as it is, and every year there is more added to the plate. The NGSS will require teachers to re-think how they teach, and what they currently teach. Design lessons that incorporate all three dimensions of the NGSS, and reflect real-world interconnections in science. Recently conducted two days of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teacher training to Kansas K-12 teachers. On day one teachers were introduced to the foundation of STEM practices and content. On day two, we went deeper into the Engineering Design Process, a key component of STEM practices. Teachers were also introduced to project and problem-based learning, rubrics, and connecting K-12 children’s literature to STEM lessons. It was a great two days, the teachers were truly excited about incorporating STEM practices and content within their classrooms, as well as acknowledging the transformations that must be made to incorporate a “true STEM” program within their classroom and school.
