Early Childhood Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Keynote

I was elated when I was contacted by the organizers of the Western Nebraska Early Childhood Association to be their keynote speaker for STEM education keynote by Dr Diana Wehrell-Grabowskitheir early childhood science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) themed conference. It’s never too early to introduce children to STEM practices and content. The conference was held in mid-October 2015 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Over 250 early childhood teachers were in attendance for the day-long STEM-themed conference. I informed the conference organizers that my keynote would be interactive, which translates into meaning participants are actively engaged in the keynote message via discussions, conducting mini hands-on STEM investigations throughout the hour long plus keynote. Within the 1.5 hour interactive keynote early childhood teachers and administrators were introduced to the foundation of STEM practices and content, and the long-term benefits and impacts of introducing young children to STEM experiences at an early age. Children are naturally curious about their environment around them, and by incorporating STEM practices and content into their early childhood learning environment the young child’s natural curiosity is nurtured and developed. Participants were introduced to the 4Cs of STEM: critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration, and the engineering design process. Participants were actively engaged in lively discussions regarding the incorporation of STEM practices and content as well as conducting STEM investigations with their peers throughout the keynote from using age-appropriate STEM tools, to exploring the engineering design process, and more. In addition to the STEM keynote I presented, I conducted two early childhood STEM-based breakout sessions in the afternoon. I’d like to thank all the individuals who helped make the Western Nebraska Early Childhood Conference a success, and a special thank you to the conference organizers for selecting me as their keynote speaker.
