I had the honor of being the keynote speaker for the Elko County Early Childhood Advisory Council Fall Conference, 2016. The theme of the conference was science,Teacher training Nevada technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in the early years. The keynote session was held on a Friday evening in the town of Elko, Nevada. Approximately 55 educators were in attendance. Initially, the audience was expected to be primarily early childhood educators up to First Grade. Elko County School District got on board with being a sponsor of the conference thus, all Elko County K-12 teachers were made aware of the conference. There were about a dozen teachers in kindergarten through secondary high level in attendance. Talk about having to be flexible in presenting STEM content to early childhood through high school teachers, I love a challenge!

During the two-hour interactive STEM keynote teachers played an active role in keynote via active discussions with their peers, as well as conducting mini STEM-based investigations, using a wide-array of mathematical and scientific tools, and tackling a mini- engineering design challenge. The evening session went well, and it was a great introduction to why there has been a movement to incorporate STEM practices and content within all classrooms across the nation. The conference would continue Saturday morning for a full-day of going deeper into STEM practices and content, inquiry-based teaching practices, and more…. The following photos are a small sampling of the interactive STEM-based keynote. I had the pleasure of introducing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) practices and content to York County Head Start teachers this past September. During the day-long STEM teacher training workshop teachers were introduced to foundational principles of STEM and STEM content appropriate for young children. We started off the day with incorporating reflective journaling in the early childhood classroom. We then headed outdoors, teachers learned how to use the schoolyard and building areas to introduce and reinforce STEM practices and content. From journaling, to using technology and tools, finding patterns and shapes, architecture, and nature of matter. Teachers were introduced to : developing lessons that develop and strengthen 21st century skills, engineering design process, technology and tools to use within the early childhood classroom, how to incorporate STEM practices within the Block Center, exploring shapes and geometry, building ramps and much more. It was a great group of teachers, they left the day-long introductory STEM teacher training workshop excited, and ready to begin implementing STEM practices and content within their early childhood classrooms. The following photos are a sample of the STEM explorations conducted during the training.
