Was really excited to have one of my STEM clients, Beaches Episcopal School share how the English Department was connecting STEM practices and content into their lessons. The 6th Grade English teacher introduced the “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” to his students. They studied the actual wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, an American Great Lakes Freighter which sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975 carrying 26 tons of iron ore, with the loss of the entire crew of 29. Students also studied the weather of the Great Lakes, shipping on the lakes, geography of the lakes, they finished up the unit by designing, constructing boats out of recycled materials. Students tested the boats to see how many pennies (iron ore) the boats could hold before they sank. The following photos are samples of some of the boats the 6th grade students at Beaches Episcopal School designed, built, and tested.
