The following video provides an overview of one of my favorite engineering design challenges I give intermediate through high school teachers during science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), Maker Ed, and NGSS trainings. The challenge can take as little as 2 hours to days, and be as simple or as complex as the teacher chooses.
The challenge incorporates the engineering design process, strengthens and develops 21st century skills, uses readily, recyclable, and affordable materials. Most important, it’s a meaningful challenge. There have been major advancements in prosthetics, and careers in prosthetics are on the rise.
I incorporate “Design a Functioning Prototype of a Prosthetic Hand” during day long to multiple-day trainings. Generally speaking I give participants up to 2 hours for total design, building and testing process. The lesson is inquiry based, and meets the learning goals of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as well. Teachers can further this lesson and challenge if they have access to 3D printers, and have their students partner with the Enabling the Future Organization. Enabling the Future is an organization that pairs people who need prosthetics with people who have 3D printers.
