President Obama discussed a range of topics concerning the present and future state of U.S. schools and education with Matt Lauer during the Today Show Sept. 27, 2010. President Obama stated that “money without reform will not fix the problem.” He defended his administration’s Race to the Top fund which has been criticized widely for putting states in competition for federal funding. Obama called Race to the Top fund a catalyst which has resulted in 32 states changing their laws to foster higher education standards, more accountability and teacher training. Obama spent time discussing Guggenheim’s documentary film Waiting for Superman which focuses on inequalities in school systems. “My administration is announcing that we are going to specifically focus on training 10,000 new math and science teachers , we have to boost performances in those areas” Obama said. A $5 billion expansion of the Educate to Innovate Initiative to improve education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) will be used in providing teacher training for new math and science teachers.
