Had a great visit at Hamilton Elementary STEM-based Magnet School in Seminole County, Florida during Engineering Week. I conducted STEM-based lessons for the entire K-5IMG_4101 population, as well as a STEM Family Night program. I designed STEM-based lessons for each of the grade levels. All lessons incorporated the Engineering Design Process. K & 1st Grade students were introduced to civil engineering via designing, building, and testing ramps. Second Grade students were habitat engineers. They designed and built mini habitats for earthworms and pill bugs. Students will maintain the habitats as well. Third Grade students were introduced to materials science concepts. They were asked to design and build a mini igloo that would house a penguin shaped ice cube. They could use only 2 materials for insulators. Fourth Grade students were sound engineers. They analyzed musical instruments, and then designed and built simple sound-making devices. Fifth Grade students were introduced to mechanical engineering and reverse engineering via toys. Students were given a toy to thoroughly analyze, take apart, and if time permitted put back together. Check out the following Power Point with photos from all of the student STEM sessions, as well as the STEM Family Night. I’ve seen it over and over again, how STEM education can transform the way teachers think and teach. STEM education will play a major role in STEM Teacher Training by Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowskitransforming our educational system in the nation and the world. STEM promotes the 4C’s: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration. Our current educational practices are greatly lacking in the 4C’s. In order for our nation and world to provide students with a quality and meaningful life-long education creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration must be allowed, encouraged, and developed within all classrooms. STEM education can indeed transform the way we teach and think. Check out this STEM teacher training video on youtube which provides visual and audio samples of teachers conducting hands-on-minds-on STEM investigations. If your school or district is ready to transform through STEM check out the STEM teacher training workshops I offer on this site.
