There’s a crisp coolness in the air this time of year, and as you look around there are noticeable changes that fall is here. Teachers are keen to integrate science explorations that connect to seasonal changes throughout the year. There are endless hands-on science explorations that can be implemented with ease and inexpensively within the early childhood and primary level classroom to reinforce fall and autumn science concepts. The most evident noticeable change during autumn is the changing of fall foliage. The beautiful colors that emerge from leaves as the production of chlorophyll slows down and eventually stops. In a relatively short time the chlorophyll disappears completely, and the other existing pigments that are normally masked by the chlorophyll are seen:
Xanthophylls- yellow pigments;
carotenoids- orange pigments; and
anthocyanins- red and purple pigments.
There are endless hands-on science explorations/investigations to conduct to reinforce fall and autumn science concepts. During my teacher training workshops teachers are actively engaged in conducting hands-on explorations to investigate fall and autumn science concepts. These explorations can be readily implemented within the classroom, and are meaningful, inquiry-based explorations. During a recent hands-on science presentation I conducted at a local voluntary pre- kindergarten school I set up numerous hands-on centers that reinforced fall and autumn science concepts. I cover any science concepts that a student may observe during the months of October through November. Not only the very obvious fall and autumn science concepts but also science concepts that are related to Halloween themes such as bats, spiders, insects, and the human skeleton. Students rotated through the fall and autumn science centers, actively engaged in discovering and exploring fall and autumn science concepts. Suggested fall and autumn science centers may include:

Observing and studying samples of real and synthetic fall leaves;

Raking fall leaves;

Making leaf rubbings of fall leaves;

Make a fall leaf plant press;

Observing and studying fall fruit and vegetables;

Sorting, matching, and weighing fall fruit and vegetables;

Observing and studying the seeds of fall fruits and vegetables;

Sorting, matching, and weighing the seeds of fall fruits and vegetables;

Weigh pumpkins;

Count the lines on a pumpkin;

Cut a pumpkin open and let the students feel the inside of the pumpkin;

Count how many seeds are in a pumpkin;

Bake the pumpkin seeds and eat the seeds;

Make predictions as to whether fall fruits and vegetables float or sink (pumpkin, squash, apples, etc..);

Discuss why the fall fruits and vegetables float or sink;

Making a fall fruit and seed bracelet or necklace using masking tape or clear laminating material (place pumpkin, squash, acorn seeds, etc.. onto tape or laminating material);

Plant fall fruits and vegetables- allow each student to plant their own seeds in a small cup, etc.;

Plant a fall fruit or vegetable garden in the schoolyard;

Take a fall autumn nature walk around the school yard, have your students make observations of the seasonal changes. Have them record and draw their observations;

Record fall and autumn temperatures, wind speed and direction, rain fall;

Have students draw pictures of the fall and autumn clouds;

Have a model bat center- where students are able to explore the characteristics of bats;

Human Skeleton center – where students are able to touch and explore the human skeleton via a model, I also use a dis-articulated human skeleton and students attempt to try and put together the entire human skeleton;

The above hands-on science centers should be a good start for implementing some educational, inquiry-based, and meaningful hands -on science centers in your classroom to introduce and reinforce fall and autumn science concepts to your students. The following photos are from a recent hands-on fall science program I conducted. Check out my teacher training workshop entitled Young Nature Explorers under the teacher training pages of this website. During the Young Nature Explorers teacher training workshop teachers are actively engaged in exploring life and environmental science concepts, as well as fall and autumn science concepts. Additionally, I offer life and environmental teacher training workshops for intermediate through high school level teachers.

You can sense a slight change in the seasons in Florida during this time of year, and the teacher training workshop I presented as a featured speaker at the Daytona/ Flagler County Early Learning Coalition Discovering The Joy Conference Young Nature Explorers could not have been timed better. Approximately 45 early childhood teachers were actively engaged in exploring age-appropriate early childhood science concepts. Additionally, teachers were introduced to connecting mathematical concepts, and children’s literature as they explore outdoor and life science concepts with their early childhood students. During the teacher training workshop teachers used eye loupes and simple microscopes to explore a wide-array of specimens from nature including: leaves, seeds, rocks, animal coverings, and more. Additionally, teachers observed and touched live garden snails, earthworms, and pill bugs. Teachers also were asked to draw pictures of what they observed throughout the teacher training workshop. As the session ended teachers were invited to bring the snails, earthworms, and pill bugs back to their classrooms to share with their students. Teachers left the session motivated, energized, and ready to teach their early childhood students about nature using their schoolyard as a classroom. Another great session and group of dedicated teachers. For further reading on sharing nature with children check out the following books. All the books listed can be ordered from Amazon via this site at no extra charge.

Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski had the wonderful pleasure of sharing her expertise and enthusiasm for sharing nature with children during the Cherokee Nation Annual Conference held in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Over one hundred Cherokee Nation early childhood teachers were introduced to numerous hands-on-minds-on environmental and life science explorations to implement within their early childhood classrooms. Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski placed emphasis on connecting simplistic methods of connecting the young child with nature on a daily basis. Teachers were actively engaged throughout the teacher training sessions:

Using eye-loupes to observe specimens from nature;

Using simple microscopes to observe leaves;

Making leaf, tree bark and tree ring rubbings;

Observing and touching live pill bugs, earthworms, and garden snails;

Observing rocks, pebbles, and sand;

Observing how rocks break down via mechanical weathering- teachers placed sedimentary rocks inside of containers and shook the containers back and forth. This resulted in the rocks breaking down;

Observing, comparing, and sorting seeds;

Making paper helicopter models that depict how certain seeds travel; and

Observing and comparing animal coverings (fish scale, bird feathers, synthetic animal fur and more.

In addition, to exploring life and environmental science concepts Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski introduced early childhood teachers to over 70 children’s literature that can be used in the classroom and at home to reinforce life and environmental science concepts. The list of books used during the workshop can be seen on the book page, as well as ordered from Amazon via the book page on this site, at no extra charge. This was a timely teacher training professional staff development experience for the Cherokee Nation early childhood teachers since outdoor education/ exploring the natural world has been designated as a major focus of their early childhood science curriculum for 2010-2011. On the national level “The No Child Left Inside Act” is now listed as one of four key pieces of legislation in the reauthorization of ESEA on the Ed & Labor Committee. For a good read Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski recommends the book “Last Child In The Woods” by Richard Louv. Last Child In The Woods is the first book to bring together a new and growing body of research indicating that direct exposure to nature is essential for healthy childhood development and for the physical and emotional health of children and adults (from official website of Richard Louv).

All of the teachers enjoyed the training session, many were heard discussing how they were going to implement what they had been introduced to immediately within their own classrooms. Many of the teachers overcame their pre-existing fears of touching common school yard invertebrates (pill bugs, earthworms, and snails). There is nothing that makes a teacher training facilitator smile more than seeing that they have had an immediate and positive impact on their audience, and more importantly the students of the teachers will benefit immensely from their teachers willingness to spend a Saturday exploring and learning about the natural world.

I had the pleasure of sharing my enthusiasm and knowledge of science with another great group of teachers yesterday. The director of a local VPK school arranged for me to come and present a three hour hands-on-minds-on teacher training workshop entitled “Connecting Science Across The Curriculum.” It’s beneficial when administration arranges for teacher training/ professional staff development during teacher pre-planning week. The teachers are refreshed after a long summer break, motivated, and looking for new ideas to implement within their classroom. As always my teacher training workshops are conducted in a format that blends science content with the “how to” implement within the classroom. Thus, teachers are expanding upon their existing science content knowledge as well as gaining new hands-on-minds-on explorations to implement within their classrooms. During the three hour workshop teachers were actively engaged in exploring science, mathematics, language arts, literacy, social studies, health, and the arts via an inquiry-based format. We started the morning off with a nature walk around the school campus. The emphasis was placed on nurturing the young child’s natural curiosity as well as developing observational skills in their students. It’s all about making observations and asking questions! Teachers explored life and environmental science concepts, physical and earth science concepts while being introduced to affective methods of connecting science across the curriculum. What a great workshop, and wonderful group of teachers.

Today is the official celebration of Earth Day. It is my hopes that all educators have embraced some type of exploration that awakens each student to the wonders of the natural world. During my life science teacher training workshops, teacher participants can be guaranteed that one of the investigations will include explorations with live earthworms. Some of the teachers are reluctant to touch the slimy and wiggly invertebrates. To see a teacher participant overcome their aversion of handling an earthworm, snail, or pillbug brings a great deal of satisfaction to me. Mainly, because I feel confident that the teacher is now more likely to expose their own students to living creatures within their own classroom.

I produced the following video to pay tribute to the earthworm, a common backyard invertebrates. The earthworm’s activities are vital to the plant and animal kingdom. Earthworms are not only consumers, they are decomposers as well. Earthworms benefit the plant and animal kingdom by decomposing organic matter, excreting nutrient rich casts, and their burrowing actions aerate the soil. An earthworm science lesson is a great hands-on science lesson to investigate a multitude of science concepts including: animal classification, interdependence, food chain, population, decomposers, consumers, and producers. As you’ll observe in the video, young children enjoy learning about snails, pill bugs, and earthworms via hands-on explorations. Ideas for earthworm explorations include:

Comparing and contrasting Gummy Worms to synthetic fishing worms, to live earthworms.

Exploring the anatomy of live earthworms.

Measuring earthworms.

Experimenting with what type surfaces earthworms prefer (dry, wet, rough, smooth, etc.).

Making earthworms out of Playdoh and clay.

Make earthworm paintings with fishing worms.

Drawing earthworms based on observations of live earthworms.

Make a classroom terrarium to house common backyard invertebrates (snails, pillbugs, and earthworms).

Make a composte or vermiposte pile.

Read children’s literature with earthworm themes.

Well on Friday, January 22nd forty early childhood educators and after-care teachers from Marion County, Florida participated in a two hour hands-on-minds-on science teacher training workshop. Participants made ramps out of race car tracks and blocks to study force, motion, and energy concepts. Then it was onto exploring the natural world by observing and analyzing a wide-assortment of objects from nature. Participants were given plenty of opportunities to explore and discover on their own and in small groups, much like what should take place within all classrooms. The workshop came to a close, and as I looked around the room I knew that these teachers would go back to their classrooms eager to explore science with their students.
